Taylor girls basketball moves past Cy Fair, advances to Regional Quarterfinals for first time in school history with 79-59 win.

There was no champaign flowing at the Coleman Coliseum Thursday night, but there was clearly a festive atmosphere following the Region III Area Playoff girls basketball game between Taylor and defending state champion Cy Fair.
And why not? For the past two seasons the Mustangs have made an exit from the post-season in the second round. But not on this evening.
Taylor (32-6) got 28 points out of senior post Amanda Jungwirth and 17 apiece from guards Jada Roberts and Amira Jenkins to take apart the Bobcats 79-59 for its 11th straight win.

                                Taylor ousts Cy-Fair

When Katy Taylor started letting Cy-Fair chip away at its sizeable lead on Thursday night, Mustangs senior Amanda Jungwirth knew her team needed to relax. The Mustangs had dominated for nearly three quarters before the defending Class 5A champion Bobcats made their run. But despite the attempted comeback, Katy Taylor calmed down, regained control and won 79-59 at Coleman Coliseum to advance to the Region III semifinals.

The Mustangs (32-6)will face Cypress Falls at 6 p.m. Tuesday night at the Berry Center.

Taylor girls basketball tops defending 5A champion, Cy-Fair, in area playoffs

The second round of the Class 5A girls basketball playoffs was a familiar place for Taylor senior center Amanda Jungwirth.
However,  the Lady Mustangs (33-6) had never advanced past the Area round (second round) in Jungwirth’s first three seasons.
She assured that it would happen on Thursday night by scoring a game-high 26 points in a 79-59 victory over defending Class 5A state champion, Cy-Fair, at Spring Branch ISD’s Coleman Coliseum.

With the girls 19-5A basketball championship already decided, all that’s left before the playoffs start the week of Feb. 14 is final positioning for the third and fourth slots

Taylor captured its second district title in as many years last Tuesday with a 54-32 win over Cinco Ranch on the Cougars’ home court. On Saturday, following a delay and game cancellations due to the inclement weather conditions state-wide, the Mustangs won their ninth game in a row by overpowering Katy 44-28 on the road.

Amanda Jungwirth scored 16 points while Amira Jenkins added 10 for Taylor, now 29-6 overall and 10-1 in district. Marley Brown scored nine for the Tigers (12-18, 3-8), who were unable to score more than eight points in any quarter of the game.

For the second consecutive season, the District 19-5A girls basketball championship banner will hang from the Taylor rafters.

The No.14-ranked Lady Mustangs got the job done Tuesday night at Cinco Ranch as Holly Ray and Amanda Jungwirth scored 12 points each Amira Jenkins added 10 first half points to lead Taylor past the Lady Cougars 54-32.

The win was the second straight 20-point win and the eighth in a row for Taylor while the Lady Cougars saw their five-game winning streak coming to an end.

“It’s hard work, especially coming into their house. They don’t make it easy,” Taylor coach Carlos Villafone said. “They’re a great program with a storied past, so anytime you can come here and get a win it’s a big deal.”

Girl’s roundup: Taylor beats Cinco Ranch to repeat as 19-5A champs

A year ago, the Taylor girl’s basketball team beat Cinco Ranch to win its first district title in almost a decade, while snapping the Cougars’ five-year reign as district champs. And it looks like the Mustangs might be on their way to a long reign of their own.

Taylor defeated Cinco Ranch on Tuesday night 54-32 to claim the District 19-5A championship. The Mustangs went on a 14-5 run in the second quarter to take a 26-11 halftime lead.

                                1. Taylor (23-6, 3-1): Yes, they lost in overtime to Memorial last week. Yes, their shooting can be very cold sometimes. But the Mustangs still remain a very good team that can score points and plays tough defense when they have to.

                                2. Memorial (11-12, 4-1): I don’t know how they do it, but despite not having a lot of size and losing one of their best players to injury, the Mustangs do what they have to do to pull out wins. Jyusef Larry is my early pick for the district’s coach of the year.

                                3. Cinco Ranch (15-12, 2-2): Just days after a great showing at the holiday tournament in College Station, the Cougars played only one good quarter in a loss to Taylor. Cinco has the talent to win this district, but the Cougars need to put a series of good games together.

Girl’s roundup: Taylor takes out Katy 45-29

After a tough loss to Memorial a week ago, Taylor girl’s basketball coach Carlos Villafone can now admit that the defeat might have been a blessing in disguise for his team. Of course, he can say that now after the Mustangs have won two in a row.

                                Taylor girls finding rhythm

The Taylor girls basketball team has had a lot of ups and downs this season, although there have been more ups than downs.
But head coach Carlos Villafone is happy in how his team has stayed constant through the course of the season and how the Mustangs have responded after its only district loss to Memorial a week ago.

Lady Mustangs set to back up last season's district championship By JASON MCDANIEL CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT Oct. 18, 2010

The Katy Taylor Lady Mustangs won a lot of games last season and, more importantly, had a lot of fun doing it.  They went 28-7 overall and lost just one district game en route to the 17-5A championship."The third year was the charm," Taylor coach Carlos Villafone said. "The kids really got the system and we had some good kids to put in that system, good athletes.
"The team chemistry was fantastic, and so it was just a neat time where the whole season was enjoyable."
The title was a feather in the hat of those seniors and a trophy in the case for a team that hadn't won district in 14 years. It was also the culmination of small steps forward Villafone's first two seasons.  "They had gone a long time watching other people win so it was a big deal," Villafone said....
